Turner Lake Cleanup and Dive Against Debris

Turner Lake Cleanup and Dive Against Debris

Turner Lake Cleanup and Dive Against Debris

Salem Scuba is hosting its second cleanup of Turner Lake, on September 14, 2024.  We will be getting together Saturday, September 14th at 9AM to complete a Dive Against Debris survey and then work on getting the underwater, park side of the lake cleaned up. If you have the time, please consider joining us in our efforts to help keep Turner Lake clean and enjoyable for all of us to continue to use! (During this Salem Scuba event, you can plan on about an hour of diving.)

If you’ve never dove Turner Lake before, it is a man-made lake that used to be a rock quarry. As such, the bottom is very loose and can be silted up very easily. Around the edges, there is a lot of grass and, true to (quarry) form, there is a decent thermocline at around 18 – 20 feet. The deepest areas (holes) in the lake, go down to about 65 feet.

If you’re interested in completing a dive specialty, with the focus of helping keep our oceans and lakes clean (while collecting needed information to help drive changes that will protect our marine life and aquatic environments, fresh or saltwater), this is a great specialty to complete!

For those of you who are interested in becoming a Master Scuba Diver and/or a Divemaster and need to pick up some specialties, this is a great option! Dive Against Debris is only a one dive specialty. Additionally, you will also learn how to conduct the needed surveys and then report the findings on your own, during this course.

Dive Against Debris specialty cost: $100

Please note, if you just want to come dive with our Salem Scuba group, you are more than welcome to join. We are offering you the chance to complete this specialty, but it is not a requirement to join!

Equipment and Information that is needed:

  • Dive bag / goody bag for the trash and/or treasures you find
  • No parking fee needed
  • Underwater metal detector, if you have one. You never know what you’ll find!
  • Don’t forget your flashlights, with fully charged batteries
  • Bring a hood, without one, that thermocline can be … shocking
  • Port-a-Potties are on site

Instructor / Dive Group Leader: Johanas Kile
